John Smith

John Smith serves as the Associate Head Coach of the Tagup University softball program and enters his third season in the role in 2026. He brings a detail-driven approach to the staff and has been a key contributor to the program’s steady climb, particularly through defensive consistency and on-field execution. During his time on the Tagup University staff, the program has returned to competitive relevance, breaking a multi-year drought with a winning season, reaching the conference tournament semifinals from the bottom of the bracket, and posting the highest RPI finish in school history at No. 47. Smith’s impact is reflected in improved fundamentals, cleaner game management, and the continued emergence of high-performing athletes recognized at the conference and national levels. Smith’s coaching background includes collegiate experience at Montana, Eastern Michigan, Concordia, and Michigan, where he worked closely with catchers and infielders while helping implement modern defensive concepts. His strengths lie in preparation, teaching efficiency, and creating systems that translate to game-day results. Before coaching, Smith competed internationally for 13 years with the Argentina National Team, serving as a long-time captain and competing on softball’s biggest stages, including World Cups and Pan American competitions. He earned All-Tournament honors at the 2017 Pan American Championship. Away from competition, Smith founded Lineup Latino, an organization focused on increasing access and visibility for softball players across Latin America and the Caribbean. His coaching philosophy prioritizes growth, accountability, and developing athletes prepared for success beyond the sport.
